BURSARIES
Bursaries are awarded to students who are in need of financial assistance to support their education. In addition to their funding, bursary recipients receive a certificate, and a digital badge.
2026 Bursaries: Applications will be accepted from August 5 to October 18.
ELIGIBILITY
An applicant must be:

A student member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) in good standing for the current academic year. Professional (MCIP®) and candidate members who have returned to school are not eligible for scholarships.

Enrolled full-time in an accredited Canadian planning program during the term of the awarding of the scholarship.

In need of financial assistance to support their education, as evidenced by government student loan documents or equivalent justification.
SUBMISSIONS
Students may apply via an online form during the application period.
Information collected includes:

A description of the applicant's background and how they became interested in planning
-
A description of the applicant's studies, noting any particular areas of interest/focus, as well as any academic achievements
-
A current résumé, demonstrating the applicant’s past and present commitments to their community or the planning profession
-
A description of how the applicant's planning education will, in theory or in practice, benefit or provide a potential service to a community or community group
-
A description of how CIP-PSTF's financial support will help the applicant achieve their educational objectives
-
Government student loan documents or equivalent evidence of the need for financial assistance to support the applicant’s education
-
Additional documents as may be required for specific bursaries
Members of an equity-deserving group are asked to self-identify.
CIP DIVERSITY IMPACT BURSARY (THREE AVAILABLE)

Created to specifically support Black students and students of colour, this bursary addresses the issue of under-representation in the planning profession. It reflects the priorities of CIP-PSTF and CIP in furthering Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and removing financial barriers to the profession.
AGES FOUNDATION DIVERSITY IMPACT BURSARY

To further the goals of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the planning profession, this bursary was created to contribute to the removal of financial barriers for Black students and students of colour working towards entering the profession.
Funding for this bursary is generously provided by the Ages Foundation.
SOAR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES INDIGENOUS STUDENT BURSARY

Awarded to an Indigenous student working towards a planning degree whose research background is reflective of their Indigenous traditions and culture and their commitment to making meaningful change in Indigenous Communities.
COLLEGE OF FELLOWS UNDERGRADUATE BURSARY

Awarded for the best submission that demonstrates the applicant’s academic achievement, as well as their leadership and commitment to community and their chosen profession and professional association.
The College of Fellows is comprised of CIP members who have been elected as Fellows, the highest honour the Institute can give to its members. This distinction recognizes excellence and draws leaders to the forefront of planning in Canada. Members of the College of Fellows privately fund this bursary.
DAVID PALUBESKI BURSARY

Awarded for the best submission that demonstrates interest in community planning, community/urban design, and/or sustainable land development - a focus area on small to medium sized communities is preferred.
In recognition of David Palubeski’s contribution to Canadian planning, the David Palubeski Bursary was created by his family, colleagues, and friends. The bursary celebrates David’s contribution to Canadian planning practice and the Canadian Institute of Planners.
TED FOBERT AND ROBERT TENNANT PLANNING MERIT BURSARY

Awarded for the best submission that demonstrates interest and intent to further innovative approaches to community building and municipal planning.
Fotenn Consultants Inc. was established in 1992 by Ted Fobert and Robert Tennant, to provide urban planning services. It has since grown to become an award-winning planning, urban design, and landscape architecture firm with offices in Ottawa, Kingston, and Toronto. In 2014, Robert and Ted took the next step in the succession of Fotenn, choosing to broaden ownership to employees. However, they still remain active in the business as strategic advisors, ambassadors, and mentors.
JOHN BOUSFIELD BURSARY

Awarded for the best submission that demonstrates a research background in an urban design/land use planning subject area that promotes innovation and helps to advance practice.
John Bousfield was a visionary professional planner who became one of Canada's greatest urban planners. Until shortly before his passing, he practiced for well over sixty years in a full range of urban planning and development projects. In 1974, he established John Bousfield Associates, now Bousfields Inc.

As a sponsor, you may shape a bursary with your own criteria beyond the basic eligibility requirements of all CIP-PSTF offerings. Options include specifications for areas and levels of study, as well as those that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion. CIP-PSTF will manage the promotion, evaluation, and awarding of the bursary and ensure the prudent management of the donated funds. Your organization will receive a charitable receipt for the full amount of your annual funding contribution.
