Message from Our President, Amanda Grochowich RPP, MCIP

In presenting the 2024 annual report, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our CIP-PSTF members, volunteers, donors, and partners for their continued dedication and support. I am also thankful to the staff of the Canadian Institute of Planners for their invaluable contributions to the management of CIP-PSTF's operations and programs.

This past year saw an increase in the depth and breadth of the financial support we were able to offer to planning students – an achievement we can be proud of. However, we also witnessed a large increase in demand for this support, indicating that there is much more we need to do. I am optimistic that the future will see CIP-PSTF and the planning community rise to this challenge.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize two people who have made a lasting impact on CIP-PSTF. In September 2024, former Board member Glenn Tunnock RPP, MCIP passed away. Glenn had served on the Board from 2016 to 2023 and had been an active member of CIP-PSTF’s standing committees as well as Jury Chair. In 2020 he generously donated the seed funding for the Glenn Tunnock Climate Change Action Scholarship, a meaningful legacy he leaves behind. The fall of 2024 also saw the departure of Beth McMahon as CIP-PSTF’s Executive Director. During her tenure, she oversaw significant organizational growth, from the development of CIP-PSTF’s first strategic plan, with mission and vision statements, to an improved governance framework, to new systems (including a dedicated website!), to an extensively expanded program of scholarships, bursaries, and awards. We are all grateful for her leadership, vision, commitment, and service which have strengthened our mission and positioned CIP-PSTF for continued growth and success – we wish her the very best for the future.

This will be my last message as President, as I leave the Board in June 2025. I have greatly enjoyed my time supporting this organization and working alongside so many dedicated Directors and other volunteers and staff. It has been deeply satisfying to see the impact of our efforts on the lives of Canada’s outstanding and diverse future planners, who will undoubtedly be going on to positively influence the planning profession and our communities.

Once again, thank you all for your support of CIP-PSTF.

Sincerely,

Amanda Grochowich RPP, MCIP

President, CIP/ICU Planning Student Trust Fund

Recipients Attend the National Planning Conference

Thanks to CIP-PSTF’s Ages Foundation Travel Awards program, all four scholarship recipients were invited to attend the hybrid CIP/APPI Conference, CONNECTION, in July in Edmonton, at no cost to them – with three of them able to attend in person and one participating online. Thank you to the Ages Foundation for this incredible support!

Bursary Upgrades

Thanks to the generosity of the planning community, the amount of money awarded for two bursaries was increased in 2024:

College of Fellows Undergraduate Bursary

The annual award was increased from $4,000 to $5,000. This bursary is funded by members of CIP’s College of Fellows.

David Palubeski Bursary

The annual award was increased from $3,000 to $5,000. This bursary is funded by the family and friends of the late David Palubeski.

Increased Support from CIP

With a move to a new annual contribution model in 2024, the Canadian Institute of Planners provided increased financial support for bursaries and organizational administration.

CIP Diversity Impact Bursaries

The number of $5,000 CIP Diversity Impact Bursaries grew from one to three per year. These bursaries specifically support Black students and students of colour and address the issue of underrepresentation in the planning profession.

Organizational Support

Increased funding from CIP to cover CIP-PSTF’s administrative expenses allows 100% of all other donations to go to scholarships and bursaries. Administrative expenses include governance and annual requirements, professional fees, stakeholder relations and communications, and operations.

More Demand for Funding

CIP-PSTF saw an increased demand for scholarships and bursaries from the previous year. While the number of applications for scholarships grew by 15%, the number of applications for bursaries increased by a massive 260%. This indicates a greater awareness of CIP-PSTF by students as well as a growing need for financial assistance for those seeking to enter the profession and contribute to the communities of tomorrow.

Additional Volunteer Opportunities

In 2024, CIP-PSTF’s scholarships and bursaries were offered at two different times of the year for the first time. This meant creating two separate juries to evaluate and score applications, with two co-chairs overseeing both juries. As a result, a call for additional volunteers was issued and the number of jurors increased from 8 to 18.

Celebrating our Volunteers

CIP-PSTF's accomplishments would not be possible without its volunteers.

Thank you for your dedication and service!

Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities

CIP-PSTF is always interested in establishing new scholarships and bursaries that will support future planners in their education and research.

Sponsoring an annual scholarship or bursary is an effective way to demonstrate your organization’s commitment to the planning profession and your support for those in need. It is also an excellent opportunity to honour your organization’s founder(s) with an impactful legacy benefitting both Canada and its future planners.

As a sponsor, you may shape a sponsorship or bursary with your own criteria beyond the basic eligibility requirements of all CIP-PSTF offerings. Options include specifications for areas and levels of study, as well as those that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.

CIP-PSTF will manage the promotion, evaluation, and awarding of the scholarship or bursary, and ensure the prudent management of the donated funds. Your organization will receive a charitable receipt in the full amount of your annual funding contribution.

To discuss scholarship or bursary sponsorships opportunities, please contact us at cip-pstf@cip-icu.ca.
